PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | Southern University Jaguars Women's Outdoor Track & Field team saw personal records fall, and Jamira Russ breaking the record in the hammer throw during the 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor and Field Championship on the campus of Prairie View A&M.
Southern ended the meet in eighth place racking up 57 points. Alabama State won their nineth consecutive Outdoor Championship edgeing out Prairie View 218-146.
Jamira Russ got it started for the Jaguars recording 10 points and broke the SWAC Championship record with a toss of 53.03m in the hammer throw on the first day of action. Alexandria McCoy threw a career-best 43.39m for a sixth-place finish.
In day two Vashti Hannah scored five points in the long jump with a fourth-place finish, Domonique Dorsey scored two points with a six-place finish on a career-toss of 5.66m.
Tessa Toney ran a career-best 14.87s for a twelfth-place finish in the 100m hurdles.
Several Jaguars qualified for the finals in the 100m Nia Williams, 200m Terralicia Mercadel, 400m Terralicia Mercadel, 400m hurdles Tessa Toney, 800m Raelynn Price.
On the third day, Nia Williams scored five points with a fourth-place finish running a career-best time 11.80s in the 100m dash. Mercadel scored three points in the 200m dash and picked up a silver medal in the 400m dash with a career-best 54.35s.
Southern improved from their 2017 mark of 37 points to 57 points this season despite being shorthanded.
The Jaguars will only lose one top performer for the 2019 campaign, Jamira Russ a five-time SWAC Champion, holds the indoor SWAC Championship record in the weight throw, and the outdoor SWAC Championship record in the hammer throw has been a vocal leader on and off the field will graduate next week with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.
