Southern University Jaguars Men's Basketball opens the season Friday, November 10, with Interim Head Coach Morris Scott at the helm. This will be the first time in six seasons the Jaguars will be led by someone other than former head coach, and now Athletic Director Roman Banks. Tip-off at the State Farm Center in Champaign, Illinois is scheduled for 7 p.m. central time versus Big Ten foe University of Illinois Fighting Illini.

In the Banks era, the Jaguars recorded five winning seasons, 2 NCAA Tournament berth, breaking a seven-year drought, a regular season title in 2014, and two Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) tournament title in 2013 and 2016.

Scott was named interim head coach in April of 2017. Scott arrived to Southern in 2011, as an assistant and was later promoted to Associate Head Coach in 2016.

The Jaguars returns nine players, led by senior Jared Sam. Sam was named to the 2016 second-team All-SWAC team and to the 2017 Preseason first-team All-SWAC team, Senior guard Chris Tomas was named to the Preseason second-team All-SWAC team

Southern University were picked to finish second in the SWAC this season.

Illinois is coming off a 20-15 season and are led by Head Coach Brad Underwood, who is in his first season in Champaign. Underwood stormed through the Southland conference, going 53-1 in his three years at Stephen F. Austin, he went 20-13 in his only season at Oklahoma State. In his four years as a head coach, he recorded 109 wins and four NCAA tournament appearances. The Illini return two starters, from a team last season that advanced to the NIT Quarterfinals.

Fans unable to attend Friday’s Illinois vs. Southern game at State Farm Center can watch it online by purchasing a BTN Plus subscription. BTN Plus programming consists of non-televised games produced by students at Big Ten universities and is available through either a monthly or annual subscription.
