Soccer drop home opener versus Youngstown State
Southern University Soccer could not sustain their strong start, dropping their home opener to Youngstown State University 4-0 Sunday morning at Jaguar Park.
Southern (0-2-0) could not capitalize on their offensive onslaught in the first half, outshooting the Penguins seven to three, including four on goal in the first half. Kendra Lewis and the defensive line held Youngstown State to two shots on goal.
“The defense and the goalkeeper played an excellent game, communicating back and forth,” said head coach Jeremy Fontenot
The Lady Jaguars strong play continued into the second period before Youngstown State (2-1-0) opened the scoring at 58:46 on a YSU Marissa Martin goal, assisted by Sydney Ossege. The Penguins scored three more within seven minutes of play to put the game away.
Going into next week’s game, Southern will focus on the middle fielders and forwards. Coach noted the improvement, from Game one to Game two in shots. The Lady Jags, who recorded two shots in last week’s opener at Lamar, improved to fire off eleven shots against the Penguins.
The Lady Jags will head down I-12 to face in-state foe Southeastern Louisiana University, in Hammond on September 3; the First touch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
