Volleyball falls short at Maverick Classic

ARLINGTON, Texas- Southern University Volleyball gets swept in all three matches over the weekend versus Incarnate Word, UNC Greensboro, and UT Arlington.

 

Incarnate Word- In the first set, the Cardinals of UIW took a strong lead over Southern. The Jaguars were able to battle back into the game and tie the score, 10-10. The Cardinals then took another lead over the Jaguars going on a 4-0 scoring run taking the lead by three. UIW led the remainder of the game topping the Southern, 25-17.

 

In set two, the Cardinals ran with a 7-0 scoring run leaving the game at a score of 10-3. Southern was able to respond putting the game back within three points. UIW responded with back-to-back aces to take the second set, 25-14.

 

Set three came closer than the first two. The Jaguars were not able to respond before the Cardinals claimed the set, 25-19.

 

Brianna Hawkins led with 7 kills, 7 digs, 2 aces, and 5 blocks. Jada Carter followed with 6 kills and Shelby Jolly with 5 kills. Arabella Hall had 4 blocks and Delaine Fulton had 2. Princess Stark had 22 assists. Moriah Delgado had 3 assists and 10 digs. Sameera Mohammed had 1 assist and 9 digs.

 

UNC GREENSBORO-The Spartans began the first set with a six-point run over the Jaguars, then taking a 12-5 lead. UNCG led by as much as six points in the entire match before Southern started to climb back in it. The set ended with a score of 25-21. 

 

The Jaguars were able to kick start set number two with a 4-1 lead on the Spartans. The game got interesting when the Spartans came back to tie the score at 8. UNCG took their first lead of the game at 17-16. The Spartans pushed past the Jaguars with three consecutive kills and went on to close the set, 25-20.

 

The Jaguars were dominated by the Spartans in the final set as they took a 3-0 lead and later increasing the lead, 7-1. Another three kills and a match-ending block closed out the set. The final in set number three was 25-13.

 

UT Arlington- The host team ousted the Jaguars, 3-0, in the final match of the weekend. Arabella Hall and Brianna Hawkins recorded five kills each in the match, while Imani Litz recorded two kills and 6 digs. Holaimoana Johnson led the team in blocks (4), and  Arabella Hall and Shelby Jolly each had one. Princess Stark had 11 assists and 3 digs, Sameera Mohammed had 3 assists and 5, digs and Moriah Delgado had 2 assists.

 

Arabella Hall was named to the 2019 University of Texas at Arlington Maverick Classic All-Tournament Team. Hall recorded a total of 9 kills, 5 blocks, and 1 ace on the weekend. The Jaguars are headed to New Orleans Friday, September 13 and Saturday, September 14 to take on Mercer, Tennessee State, and University of New Orleans.
