Riding a four-game win streak which included a scintillating home win over LSU, Southern University baseball made quick work of Alcorn State, winning 11-1 in seven innings Tuesday night at Lee-Hines Field.

Southern extends its win streak to five game and pushed its overall win total to 22 in dominant fashion as the Jaguars belted out 15 hits and scored in every inning except the second frame in the 10-run win.

A trio of Southern Jaguars - Tyler LaPorte, Johnny Johnson and Bobby Johnson -  collected three hits each and helped Southern build an 8-0 lead, which included a 4-run first inning that set the tone in the games early stages.

After starting pitcher Eli Finney (2-2), who was recently named the Southwestern Athletic Conference's pitcher of the week, retired the side top open Tuesday's game, Southern made Alcorn State starter Tyler Smith (0-2) uncomfortable with a four run outburst. LaPorte doubled down the right field line to lead off the first then score on Hunter David's single to third. Johnny Johnson stepped in the batter's box to lace a triple down the right field line to score David.

An error by the Braves' shortstop allowed Johnson to score and Malik Blaise to reach second base. Ashanti Wheatley walked and Zavier Moore singled before Bobby Johnson launched a sacrifice fly to right field to score Blaise and punctuate an impressive first inning.

Catcher Bobby Johnson finished 3 for 3 at the plate with a run scored and lead the Jaguars with four RBIs. Johnny Johnson - Bobby's younger brother - and LaPorte, who score three times, each went 3 for 5 at the plate. Johnson fell an RBI shy of matching his brother's total.

Finney, who pitched three innings, retired all nine batters he faced and allowed one hit and fanned four Alcorn State hitters. In his last 10 innings on the mound, the junior college transfer has allowed two runs and struck out 11 batters.

Southern ended the game outscoring Alcorn State 7-1 to activate the league's 10-run mercy rule in the bottom of the seventh. David's sacrifice fly plated Bobby Johnson, who led the inning off with a single. Johnny Johnson sent the Braves packing with a single through the middle of the infield that scored designated hitter Eian Mitchell.

The Jaguars, who lead the SWAC Western Division, will host Texas Southern in their final conference series at Lee-Hines Field on Easter weekend. The three-game series opens on Good Friday and is scheduled for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
