Collins putback seals the victory for the Jaguars
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Junior LaQuentin Collins scored his only two points of the night with 11.7 seconds remaining in the game to secure a 53-52 road win for Southern University Saturday night against Alabama A&M.
Southern improve to 5-2 in the Southwesten Athletic Conference and maintains sole possession of second place behind Texas Southern.
The Jaguars had two players finish in double figures led by senior forward Shawn Prudhomme with 13 points and junior forward Jared Sam with 11.
Alabama A&M forward Quinterian MCConico had an opportunity to win the game after being fouled by Prudhomme with 2.7 seconds left in the game. Despite leading all scorers with 22 point,s McConico missing both free throws. Chris Thomas grabbed one of his eight rebounds after McConico's missed attempt to seal the Jaguars third srtaight win.
“Tonight showed the character of our team, that we could survive and come away with a tough road win in a difficult environment,” said Roman Banks.
Southern led by two points at the half 28-26.
Prudhomme scored eleven of his thirteen points in the first half while Sam scored ten of his eleven points in the second half.
“I had to be a little more aggressive in the second half,” said Sam.
McConico was the only player to score in double figures for the Bulldogs who fell to 1-16 overall and 1-5 in SWAC play.
The Jaguars will travel to Montgomery, Ala. to take on the Alabama State Hornets Monday night at 7:30 pm.
