SU starts fast, falters late in 62-55 loss at ECU
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Southern forward Briana Green scored 16 points and snagged 8 rebounds but a 12-4 run in the final 6:01 powered East Carolina to a 62-55 win Tuesday night in Greenville, S.C.
The 7-point loss was the final game of 2016 for Southern (2-6), who opens Southwestern Athletic Conference play at home on Jan. 2 against Prairie View A&M.
The Pirates (9-3) led 44-37 before a Miaya Crowder layup sparked a pair of 6-0 runs over a 3:58 span. Green's jumper with 7:53 left produced the Jaguars first lead of the second half at 49-48. After Cortnei Purnell's jumper gave Southern a 51-50 lead, ECU responded with a 12-4 run to close out the Jaguars over the games final 6:01.
Green's 16-point performance led a trio of Jaguars, including Purnell (15) and Crowder (12), who scored in double digits. Despite shooting 36 percent from the field, Southern's defense helped the Jaguars keep the game close by forcing 22 ECU turnovers and collecting 14 steals.
Bre McDonald led ECU with a game high 20 points on 9 of 17 shooting with 11 rebounds. ECU finished 27 of 54 from the field but struggled at the foul line going 6 of 17.
Southern will focus their attention on preparing for SWAC play while enjoying a 13-day hiatus to observe the Christmas and New Year's holiday. The Jaguars return open defense of their 2016 SWAC regulasr season crown when they host the Panthers in the F.G. Clark Activity Center at 5:30 p.m.
