HOUSTON – Despite Junior forward Briana Green scoring a team high 22 points, Southern fell 58-81 to Texas A&M in a neutral site game hosted in the Campbell Center.
The Jaguars trailed 20-13 after the first quarter before the Aggies used a 14-2 run at the start of the second quarter to distance themselves and take a commanding 41-23 lead into the half.
With the Aggies holding a sizeable advantage in the interior, Texas A&M controlled the boards, outrebounding Southern 45-23 – 19-6 on the offensive glass - while shooting 49 percent from the field. Southern shot 6 of 12 from three-point range but only shot four free throws for the game.
Green, who matched her season high with the 22-point effort, finished 10-of-15 from the field with three rebounds and three assists. True freshman Jaden Towner added 11 points, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc, while Samantha Duncan had nine points on 3-of-10 shooting for SU.
Three Aggies posted double-doubles led by Khaalia Hillsman’s game high 22 points and 12 rebounds. Anriel Howard added 12 points and 11 boards while Curtyce Knox had 11 points with 10 assists. Jasmine Lumpkin poured in 17 points and Taylor Cooper chipped in 10.
Southern will conclude the non-conference portion of its 2016-17 schedule when the Jaguars travel to Greenville, N.C. to face East Carolina Dec. 20 before stepping away from the hardwood to enjoy the Christmas and New Years break.
The Jaguars return to the F.G. Clark Activity Center to open Southwestern Athletic Conference play against Prairie View A&M on Jan. 2. Tipoff betwen the Jaguars and the Panthers is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and the game will stream live on GoJagSports.com.
