Grambling State - 24, Bethune-Cookman - 23 at Cincinnati, OH (35,608)
Playing in front of 36,068 fans at the Ohio Classic, Grambling battled from a 13-0 halftime deficit to defeat Bethune-Cookman. Senior kicker Brian Morgan's 36 yd FG with :09 remaining in the game lifted the Grambling State Tigers to their first win of the season.
The Tigers trailed 13-0 at the half and 16-7 in the third quarter ( 6:07), but outscored the Wildcats 17-10 the rest of the game for the win.
Freshman QB Brandon Landers passed for 231 yds (15-31-1) and 2 TD triggered the Tiger second half offense. The Grambling State offense generated 360 yds of Total Offense (129 rush, 231 pass) with WR Clyde Edwards catching six passes for 126 yds and 1 TD.
Top defensive performances came from Grambling State's Kenneth Pettway and Dimitri Carr, who finished with 10 tackles each. Pettway had 7 solo tackles with 6 TFLs (33) and 3 sacks (26) and 1 pass breakup. Carr is credited with 4 solos with 1 TFL (5).
Howard - 17, Alcorn State - 10 at Landover, MD (15,206)
Six times in their last eight games, the Braves have pulled games “out of the fire” while they were building a nine game winning streak. They were unable to overcome a poor first half against the Howard Bison, losing 17-10.
Howard managed a 6-0 halftime lead after booting FGs of 39 & 40 yds in the first and second quarters respectively. The Braves, however, managed only 39 yds of Total Offense (-3 rush, 42 pass) in the half.
Alcorn took a 7-6 lead in the third quarter ( 7:43) after QB Donald Carrie led the Braves on a 10 play 94 yd drive. Howard regained the lead 14-7 after an 80 fumble recovery return later in the quarter ( 4:36). The teams traded FGs for scores of 14-10 ( 1:39 - 3 rd) and 17-10 ( 6:00 - 4 th). before the Braves attempted another game winning drive with 2:09 remaining in the game. Starting on the own 2 yd line, Alcorn State moved 59 yds in 10 plays, before suffering an interception in the end zone with :05 left in the game.
On the game, Alcorn finished with 243 yds of Total Offense (56 rush, 187 pass). QB Donald Carrie finished with a sub par 187 yd passing performance (14-37-2), 1 TD. Howard managed 190 yds of Total Offense (190 rush, 0 pass). The Howard QB completed 0 passes (0-7-2).
Braves' defenders Antonio Cooper and Dwan Wilson finished the game with 9 tackles each, both had 5 solos.
Tennessee State - 21, Jackson State - 20 at Memphis, TN (55,015)
For the second straight week, the Tigers of Jackson State played a strong game, but lost 21-20 to rival Tennessee State when the T-State Tigers scored on a 6 yd pass with :08 left in the game.
After a scoreless first half that saw both teams miss a pair of FG attempts, J-State's Cletis Gordon electrified the crowd with a 73 yd punt return for a TD and a 7-0 lead (12:57). The J-State defense held T-State scoreless the rest of the quarter.
Scoring in the fourth quarter came fast and furious as T-State scored early ( 13:10 on a 35 yd interception return for a 7-7 game. On the ensuing kick-off Gordon returned the kick 89 yds for a TD, but the PAT kick was missed for a 13-7 J-State lead ( 12:56). With 8:50 left in the game, T-State drove 66 yds on 8 plays for a 14-13 lead. The Tigers from Jackson countered with a 61 yd, 4 play drive for a 20-14 lead with 6:46 left in the game. T- State then began an 18 play, 84 yd drive for the game winning TD with :08 left in the game.
Offensively, J-State generated 262 yds of Total Offense (61 rush, 201 pass), but T-State produced 313 yds of Total Offense (164 rush, 149 pass). J-State QB Brian Green passed for 159 yds ( 7-11-0) and Cletis Gordon gained 162 yds in returns (73 Pnt, 89 KOs) with 2 TDs.
Defensively, LB Joseph Scott had 13 tackles (9 solo) with 1 TFL (4) and 2 pass breakups. Vincent Dancy finished the game with 12 tackles (7 solo) with 1 TFL (8) and 1 sack (8)
Alabama A&M - 30, Miss. Valley State - 20 at Huntsville, AL (10,235)
The Bulldog air defense was tested, but the offense capitalized on late Delta Devils miscues to fashion a 30-20 victory.
Miss. Valley got on the scoreboard first, after they fashioned a 71 yd drive in the first quarter ( 10:48) for a 6-0 lead. AAMU scored a 27 yd FG late in the quarter (0:36), and two TDs in the second quarter ( 12:08 & 9:10) for a 17-6 lead. MVSU closed out the scoring in the half with a 39 yd FG ( 5:16) for a 17-9 halftime game.
The third quarter scoring belonged to the Delta Devils as they scored a TD, and a 2 pt PAT run at the 10:46 mark, followed by a 22 yd FG (7:59) for a 20-17 MVSU lead after three quarters. A Bulldogs' punt pinned MVSU on their own 4 yd line and after 3-and out the Delta Devils ensuing punt gave AAMU the football on the MVSU 31 yd line. Two plays later, AAMU scored the go-ahead TD ( 11:20). Later in the quarter, MVSU tried to cash in on a Bulldog fumble ( 6:53), but their 20 yd FG was blocked. Late in the game the Bulldogs did turn a MVSU fumble into a TD ( 3:28) for the final 30-20 margin
Offensively, The Bulldogs gained 358 yds of Total Offense (67 rush, 291 pass). Bulldog QB Johnny Keith passed for 247 yds (11-33-0) and 5 TDs. WR Kevin Francis had 9 catches for 119 yds and 2 TDs. For MVSU, QB Aries Nelson passed for 255 yds ( 11-31-1) and 1 TD and finished with another 34 yds rushing (289 Total Offense) despite being sacked five times (38). The Delta Devils gained 336 yds of Total Offense (81 rush, 255 pass) with WR William Smith pulling down 3 catches for 121 yds and 1 TD.
Defensively, AAMU's Johnny Baldwin finished as the top performer with 16 tackles (7 solo), 2.5 TFLs (3), 1 pass break up, 1 blocked kick and 3 QB hurries. MVSU's Jarrette Trout finished with 11 tackles (5 solo) 1.5 TFL (11), 1 sack (10), 1 Forced Fumble and 5 QB Hurries.

OFFENSIVE
Thomas Ricks - Southern (QB, 6-3, 215, Sr., LaPlace, LA)
Ricks had a career day in SU's 42-12 win over Prairie View. Thomas passed for 257 yds and 5 TDs (24-36-1) along with 55 yds rushing for 312 yds of Total Offense. He personally accounted for 58% of Southern's 535 yds of offense in the game.
DEFENSIVE
Johnny Baldwin - Alabama A&M (LB, 6-2, 218, Soph., Bessemer, AL)
Johnny finished as the top defensive performer in Bulldogs 30-20 win over Miss. Valley State. Baldwin finished the game with 16 tackles (7 solo), 2.5 TFLs (3), 1 pass break up, 1 blocked kick and 3 QB hurries. His blocked kick came in the fourth quarter ( 6:53) and was the potential tying score with his team leading 23-20.

Cletis Gordon- Jackson State (DB, 6-2, 195, Jr., Amite, LA)
Gordon scored two TDs on kick returns (162 yds) against Tennessee State while splitting time on special teams, defense and offense. His first TD, in the third quarter, was on a 73 yd punt return, put Jackson State ahead 7-0. His second TD, in the fourth quarter, was an 89 yd kick-off return to put Jackson State ahead 13-7 immediately after Tennessee State had tied the score at 7-7.

Nelson passed for accounted for 289 yds of Total Offense (255 pass, 34 rush) against Alabama A&M. He was 11-31-1 passing with 1 TD.
Brandon Landers - Grambling State (QB, 6-0, 190, Fr, Monroe, LA)
Landers led Grambling State to a 24-23 come-from-behind win over Bethune-Cookman. Brandon personally gained 293 yds of Grambling's 360 yds in Total Offense. He passed for 231 yds (15-31-1) and 5 TDs and rushed for 62 yds.
